SUSTAINABLE DESIGN STRATAGIES
Throughout this course students will engage, and be able to see the bigger, more holistic picture in which they will be designing and making products . Utilizing the “Ecodesign Strategy Wheel” created by Okala Practitioner, students will be introduced to eight phases where they will learn to look for opportunities to design and or ask appropriate questions of the development team, or drive individually through the product development system. With this knowledge and information, you will be empowered to help steer product development towards more responsible and ecological directions. Class time will be set up so that students will be able to review and discuss content read and or researched on a specific topic. Students will develop and discuss their personal views on sustainability and its impact on our society. There will be multiple projects and opinion papers as deliverables throughout the semester. Some will be individual projects where students will need to show their individual research on a product and then develop and or re-envision that product taking into consideration the topics covered in class. Additionally, there will be group or team projects where teams will work together to generate design iterations and “pitches” to influence upper management to consider these new sustainable directions.
