MAPPING PORTALSA portal is a gateway to another space, time, world or dimension. In this class, students will meander through portals that take them from Detroit to Addis Ababa, Capetown, Dakar, Harare, and back to explore artists’ and designers’ worldviews and ways of form-making and practice honing their own art-making across dimensions of time and space. Students will immerse themselves into the global dialogue of contemporary art and design through a series of lectures, conversations, and virtual “studio visits” with artists, community centers, residencies, galleries, museums outside the United States. To prepare for conversations with these visitors, students will be introduced to the context in which they operate through a mixture of fiction and nonfiction films, music, and readings that situate the sociopolitical history recommended by our portal hosts. Each satellite location will be accompanied by topical conversations on space, past/future, now, and text as image. null Along the way, CCS students will be joined on this journey by students from the National Gallery of Zimbabwe in Harare. Students will interact, converse and collaborate with peers from Harare through a series of research and studio prompts. These prompts will lead each student into either individual, participatory, or collaborative projects aggregated into one online group exhibit / archive at the end of the semester. The goal of the class is for students to gain strategies for locating their individual voice within cultural spaces and find connectivity through recognizing and exploring difference. Open to all majors.
