CCS Laptop Recommendations 2026-2027

Updated 09.17.2026

Laptop requirements vary by academic program. The specifications below are intended to help students purchase a computer that will support their coursework throughout their time at the College for Creative Studies.

These specifications represent the recommended configuration for students purchasing a new computer. A higher-performance configuration is acceptable and may provide a longer useful lifespan, provided it is compatible with the software required by your program.

Students should consult their academic department if they have questions about specific hardware or software requirements.

General Laptop Recommendations

The following recommendations are intended for CCS students whose departments do not have specific laptop requirements. Students entering Communication Design & Strategy or Graduate Studies programs, including Transportation Design, User Experience Design (UXD), Color & Materials Design, or Interdisciplinary Design Studies (IDS), should scroll down for program-specific laptop requirements and recommendations.

Before purchasing a computer, we strongly recommend checking with your academic department. Software requirements vary significantly between programs, particularly for students working with 3D modelling, animation, rendering, video, CAD, and other GPU-intensive applications.

Windows ARM Laptops

Windows laptops using ARM-based processors, including Qualcomm Snapdragon processors, are not recommended as a general CCS laptop unless the student’s department has confirmed that all required applications are compatible.

While Windows on ARM compatibility continues to improve, some specialized creative, CAD, 3D, rendering, plug-in, peripheral, and licensing applications may require Intel or AMD x86-64 processors.

Communication Design & Strategy

Communication Design & Strategy students are required to own or purchase a laptop for their studies.

The laptop will be an important part of coursework throughout the program. Students purchasing a new computer should choose a configuration capable of supporting current creative applications for approximately four years.

Apple MacBook laptops are recommended for Communication Design & Strategy students. A comparable Windows laptop may also be used.

Before purchasing a laptop, students with questions should contact their Department Chair.

Recommended Apple MacBook Pro

14-inch or 16-inch MacBook Pro

Students should consult their department and the CCS Software System Requirements page before purchasing hardware specifically for a particular application.

Additional Purchasing Recommendations

When purchasing a laptop for use at CCS, students should consider the computer a long-term academic investment. Whenever possible, choose a configuration that provides additional performance beyond the minimum required specifications.

For a new computer purchased for the 2026–27 academic year, CCS generally recommends:

Apple

  • Apple M5 or better
  • M5 Pro recommended for demanding creative applications
  • 24–32 GB unified memory
  • 1 TB SSD

Windows

  • Windows 11, 64-bit
  • Intel Core Ultra 7 or AMD Ryzen 7 / Ryzen AI 7 or better
  • 32 GB DDR5 RAM
  • 1 TB NVMe SSD
  • Dedicated NVIDIA RTX graphics for 3D, rendering, animation, and visualization

Students should avoid purchasing a computer based solely on minimum software requirements. Applications and operating systems will continue to become more demanding during a student’s time at CCS.

Before purchasing a computer, students should confirm any program-specific requirements with their academic department.
