The CAP department at the College for Creative Studies (CCS) provides free, high quality art & design classes & activities that foster positive youth development, promote self-discovery and self expression, and help students develop their artistic & creative skills. These programs bring art & design education to youth in under-resourced communities with the goals of helping students develop their artistic skills, informing young people about career & educational opportunities in the arts, and implementing the arts into the diverse neighborhoods and communities of Detroit.
CAP Work Study Redford Reads leaders are responsible for reading stories aloud to young children from kindergarten through third grade at the Detroit Public Library, Redford Branch. In addition, they are also responsible for setting up, cleaning up, and helping those children participate in and complete a simple art activity that the Detroit Public Library Redford Branch staff have selected.
Duties and Responsibilities:Facilitate a reading program at the Detroit Public Library, Redford Branch
Be on site at least 15 minutes prior to the scheduled start of the program
Gather and transport supplies (coloring pages & crayons) to the program site
Help ensure classroom is kept clean and organized
Help ensure classroom noise is kept to an acceptable level
Other tasks as they arise
Submit hours with accuracy, with notes, and on time
Check CCS email & text messages regularly and respond accordingly
Experience working with children
Experience teaching children (not mandatory)
Must be available to commit to specific program assignments
Must be able to get to and from off-site program assignments (access to a car is ideal)
Must be on time (at least 15 minutes early) and attend every program assignment
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills – especially with diverse groups of people
Must be able to communicate and read children’s books aloud in English
Ability to work with a diverse student, faculty, and administrative population
Proficient technology skills to include texting, email, Google Drive, and Google Forms
Knowledge of and interest in serving the children in Detroit’s diverse communities
Must be eligible for Federal Work Study, as per funding requirements
