Position: Work Study Teaching Assistant (Community Arts Partnerships – CAP)

Summary:

The CAP program reaches out to the Detroit community by providing free, high quality art and design classes and resources online and virtually to youth and their families. CAP’s student-centered programs open doors to the creative opportunities of the 21st century for nearly 4,000 students each year.

In support of its mission, CAP provides programs that: foster positive youth development through visual arts programs focused on skill development, self-discovery, and self-expression; bring education in art, design, and new technologies to youth in under-served communities; inform young people about career and educational opportunities in the visual arts and design; and bring the arts to bear in the redevelopment of the City of Detroit and its diverse neighborhoods and communities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

● Support the CAP Teaching Artists with their responsibilities
○ Be on site at least 15 minutes prior to the scheduled start of class
○ Read, understand, and be ready to support Lead Teacher’s curriculum
○ Assist with the set-up/break down of classroom
○ Assist with art supply/materials distribution
○ Support with classroom instruction, support students to complete projects/tasks
○ Support with classroom management/student behavior/attendance
○ Help ensure classroom is clean for instructors to use and clean when we dismiss for the day
○ Other tasks as they arise

● Submit hours with accuracy (including notes) before deadlines
● Check CCS email & personal voicemail regularly and respond accordingly

Qualifications:

● Experience working with kids
● Experience teaching kids (not mandatory)

Requirements:

● Must be available and commit to specific program assignments
● Must be able to get to/from off-site program assignments (own car is ideal) [must be on time (15min early) to and attend every program assignment]
● Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills – especially with diverse groups of people
● Ability to handle multiple projects and changing priorities
● Ability to work with a diverse administrative staff/faculty/student/parent population
● Depending on assignment, student employees may be fingerprinted and undergo additional background checks before being placed in classrooms with children
