This course offers students an introduction to the,historical, cultural, social, and economic,development of consumerism in the United States.,Students focus on four issues: the evolution of,the consumer market from the late nineteenth,century up to the present; the impact of,advertising, merchandising, and media,communications in constructing and reinforcing,consumer identities, values, and institutions; the,impact of consumption on the representation and,performance of race, class, gender, and sexuality;,and the long-running debate over the social,effects of consumption.
