AI Guidelines – Interior Design

Artificial Intelligence AI can significantly impact the interior design field by providing innovative tools and solutions that enhance the design process, improve efficiency, and enable personalized experiences. While AI has the potential to revolutionize interior design, it’s essential to maintain a balance between AI-driven automation and the creative intuition and expertise of human designers. The human touch and design sensibility remain crucial in creating unique and emotionally engaging interior spaces.

The Interior Design Department developed these guidelines in consultation with industry professionals, which should be followed with the CCS Institutional AI Statement. If faculty or students have questions about implementing these guidelines in the classroom, they should contact the Department Chair. These guidelines aim for the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the classroom to ensure that students use AI ethically, effectively, and efficiently for research and process purposes only.

Guidelines:

  • AI for Research and Process Purposes Only:

Utilizing Artificial Intelligence AI to collect, analyze, and interpret data to support student research – Enhancing specific processes, such as the ideation process. Artificial Intelligence AI is increasingly being utilized in the design industry to quickly and efficiently provide options for form, shape, texture, and color, among other aspects. By using AI in design work and processes, efficiency and effectiveness are heightened.

  •  AI-Created Content:

Students can only use AI as a reference tool to support their creativity and understanding. Students are prohibited from using any direct AI output within any final deliverable or claiming ownership of any AI-derived output.

This guideline ensures that students use AI to inform their understanding and creativity rather than relying solely on AI output to create their final products

  • Avoidance of Direct Names and References:

Design students must avoid using any direct names of artists, designers, companies, or brands while utilizing image creation AI tools to safeguard their personal and artistic integrity. In cases where research purposes require such usage, students must obtain counsel and consent from their faculty without fail.

  • Documentation and Citation:

Students must identify and acknowledge the specific instances of AI usage in their work to prevent plagiarism and uphold personal and artistic integrity. Giving proper citations is absolutely crucial and cannot under any circumstances be overlooked. It is imperative that students take the time to review the documentation and citation examples available on the Canvas portal, and they should not hesitate to seek guidance from their professors if necessary.

  • Enforcement:

Failure to comply with this policy will result in disciplinary action, potentially leading to either a failing grade or suspension from the institution.

Pedagogical methodologies in all courses within the Department will emphasize active learning and process work to ensure students can evidence their efforts within assigned projects.

The CCS Academic Integrity Policy has been revised to include AI-related concerns. Compliance with the CCS Institutional AI Statement is mandatory for integrating AI into the curriculum. Any deviation from the guidelines must be submitted in writing to the Department Chair for approval. No exceptions will be granted without prior written approval.

As AI technology is evolving, these, and the institution’s, guidelines will change as context requires. The above guidelines are in place for the 2023/2024 academic year and may be revised in summer 2024.
