The UDOIT Accessibility Checker

The UDOIT accessibility checker is a tool that you can use to find and fix accessibility issues in your Canvas course. Unlike the Canvas built-in Accessibility Checker which only scans one page at a time, UDOIT scans your entire course at once, identifying issues and providing fixes.

Enabling UDOIT Accessibility Check

In the course navigation menu, select the UDOIT Accessibility Check link.

A screenshot of a Canvas course navigation menu shows a list of links with a dark purple arrow pointing specifically to the "UDOIT Accessibility Check" link. This link is positioned between "Zoom" and "Files". Above the arrow, visible links include "Discussions," "Send Grades to AARO," "Quizzes," and "Zoom". Below the arrow, the links for "Files," "Collaborations," and "BigBlueButton" are marked with a crossed-out eye icon, indicating they are hidden from student view.

If you do not see the link, click on Settings in the course navigation menu, then click on Navigation to enable the link.

The first time you click on the UDOIT Accessibility Check link, a landing page will appear. You can check the box to Skip this page in the future.

A screenshot of the UDOIT welcome page displays the heading "Welcome to your Canvas accessibility assistant!" alongside a list of features, such as scanning course content and generating accessibility reports. To the right, an embedded video player is titled "How Does UDOIT Work?". At the bottom of the screen, a dark purple arrow points to a checkbox labeled "Skip this page in the future," which is located immediately to the left of a blue "Continue" button.

Read and Interpret Your Accessibility Score

On the top of the UDOIT page, find and click Scan Now. Once the scan is complete it will display an accurate accessibility score, identify inaccessible items, and provide fixes.

A screenshot of the UDOIT Home Page displays a large "90%" Course Accessibility Score on the left, accompanied by a green, yellow, and red progress bar. A dark purple arrow points to the blue "Scan Now" button in the top right corner. Below the score, a "Scorecard" section lists accessibility issues by severity: High Impact (86%), Medium Impact (100%), and Low Impact (100%). On the right side, a "Ways to Get Started" panel suggests fixing "Easiest to fix" items or addressing "High Impact Issues" first. At the bottom, summaries for "Content Summary" and "Course Files Summary" display specific counts for errors, suggestions, and file issues.

We recommend aiming for an accessibility score between 90-93%.

Below the accessibility score, you will see a scorecard containing High, Medium, and Low Impact items that will improve your accessibility score.

Some items that will significantly affect your accessibility score include:

  • Inadequate color contrast
  • Images without alt text
  • Non-descriptive links
  • Canvas Pages without headings or structure
  • PDFs
  • Tables without header rows
  • Videos without captions

How to Fix Accessibility Issues

UDOIT provides two ways to view needed accessibility fixes: by clicking into the Scorecard, and by clicking the UFIXIT tab in the top menu. UFIXIT will provide more detail about the accessibility issues in your course, and will allow you to review individual issues and fix them.

A screenshot of the UDOIT "UFIXIT" page displays a course accessibility score of 90% at the top, along with a summary of 16 errors and 2 suggestions. Below the score, a table lists specific accessibility issues with columns for Status, Title, Type, and Issue. The visible rows all relate to an "Inaccessible Page" and flag errors such as "Alternative text uses filename rather than a descriptive label," "Insufficient text color contrast with the background," and "Potential use of color alone to communicate information." Each error row includes a "Review" button on the far right to address the specific issue.

Click the Review button next to one of the accessibility issues. UFIXIT will give you a description of the issue as well as link to relevant accessibility resources. You will also be given options to remediate the issue (for instance, add alternative text to an image). Once you are finished, you can close the window or click Next Issue to move on.

A screenshot of the UDOIT interface displays the "UFIXIT" tool addressing an accessibility error titled "Alternative text uses filename rather than a descriptive label." The interface provides a text field under "Edit Alternative Text" that currently contains the filename "pose2-1.jpeg," which needs to be replaced with a description. To the right, a "Preview Changes" window shows the image in question: a cartoon peacock with green tail feathers fully spread. Below the text field are a "Mark image as decorative" checkbox and a blue "Save" button.

Click on the Review Course Files tab in the top menu to learn more about accessibility issues with the files in your course. Here you will see a list of files, a description of what the file issues are, as well as options to create alternate formats of those files, such as an HTML file or a Canvas page.

A screenshot of the UDOIT "Review Course Files" tab displays a course accessibility score of 90% alongside a summary noting "1 File Issues" and "1 Total Files." The main list shows a single entry for the file "Laura Mulvey, Visual Pleasure.pdf," which is flagged with a red warning icon and the issue description "Image-based file detected." The file row also displays a "Last Updated" date of 2025-09-03, lists available "Alternate Formats" as HTML and PAGE, and includes a "Review" button on the far right.

Click the Review button to see your different options for fixing the file. This can include replacing the file with a Canvas page, as well as replacing the file with another uploaded file. It’s important to note that PDFs will often have accessibility issues, particularly those created from scans.

A screenshot of the UDOIT file remediation window for the document "Laura Mulvey, Visual Pleasure.pdf" displays a red alert for "Image-based file detected." The "File Actions" section on the left offers buttons to "Replace file with an auto tagged PDF," "Replace file with a page," "Replace file with an uploaded file," or "Delete file from course." The "Alternate Formats" section on the right lists options such as Canvas Page, HTML File, ePub, Plain Text, and Audio File, indicating which formats are available or need to be requested. Below this, a "Review Status" box contains a checkbox to "Mark as reviewed," and navigation buttons for "Previous File" and "Next File" are located at the bottom right.
