Submitting an Assignment on Behalf of a Student

As an instructor, you may run into a situation where you need to submit a file for an assignment on behalf of a student within your course. This tutorial will describe how to submit a file to a Canvas assignment on behalf of a student in your course.

Use Case

A student e-mailed you a file or sent you a file via the Canvas Inbox rather than submitting the file via the Canvas assignment. You want to submit the file so that it’s connected to the assignment in question.

  1. Click on Grades in your left-hand course navigation menu.
  2. Find the column (assignment name) and the row (student name) where you will submit the file(s) on behalf of the student.
  3. Click your mouse in the cell for that assignment / student.
  4. Click the arrow pointing to the right within the cell.
  5. At the top of the slide-out menu that appears on the right-hand side of your screen, click the Submit for Student button.
  6. In the Upload File window that appears, either drag a file on top of the rocket ship, or click the rocket ship to select a file from your computer. Repeat this step to attach additional files.
  7. Click the Submit button.

NOTE: If your assignment originally used Turnitin to check for plagiarism, submitting files on behalf of students for Canvas assignments will not check the files for plagiarism. This is because students need to check a box before submitting to confirm their assignments are original work. Instructors do not have this option when submitting files on behalf of students.
