Marking a Canvas Course as a “Favorite”

Marking a Canvas Course as a "Favorite"

Canvas allows you to “favorite” active courses so that they appear on your Dashboard and on your Courses global navigation menu.

  • If no courses are “favorited”, then up to 20 of your courses will automatically show on your Canvas Dashboard.
  • Example: If you “favorite” five active courses, then only those five courses will appear on your Canvas Dashboard. All other courses will have to be accessed via the Courses >> All Courses screen.

Favoriting Canvas Courses via the All Courses Screen

  1. In Global Navigation, click the Courses link.
  2. Select All Courses from the fly-out menu.
  3. On the All Courses screen, active courses will be displayed near the top of the screen. Past Enrollments appears below them.
  4. In the left-hand Favorite column, click the star icon next to any active course to mark it as a “favorite”. The course will now be displayed on your Canvas Dashboard.

A tooltip pop-up box appears, containing the text "Click to add Canvas Foundations to the courses menu.". Below this row, two other courses, "Canvas Foundations - Credentials Test" and "CCS Canvas Student Orientation," have filled orange star icons, indicating they are currently favorited, while the top course, "All Users," has an empty star. The global navigation menu is partially visible on the left side of the screen.
  1. Repeat Step #4 for any additional courses you wish to “favorite”.

Unfavoriting a Course from the Canvas Dashboard

If you have “favorited” a course that you no longer want to see on your Canvas Dashboard, you can “unfavorite” that course directly from the Dashboard without having to go to your Courses >> All Courses screen. From the Canvas Dashboard:

  1. Click on the Options (three vertical dots) icon at the upper right corner of any course card.
  2. Click the Move tab.
  3. Select ⭐ Unfavorite.

The menu is expanded into a pop-up box displaying two tabs, "Color" and "Move," with a yellow callout labeled "2" indicating the "Move" tab is selected. Below the tabs, options are listed to "Move to top," "Move up," "Move down," and "Move to bottom". At the bottom of this menu, a yellow callout labeled "3" highlights the "Unfavorite" option, which is next to a solid star icon.
