Gradebook Best Practices

Before Submitting Midterm and Final Grades

• Ensure that all assignment groups are weighted correctly, and assignments are in their correct assignment groups. Refer to the following documents for more information:
  • Setting Up a Weighted Gradebook in Canvas
  • Unused Assignment Groups in Canvas Courses
  • Ensuring the Accuracy of the “Total” Column in your Canvas Gradebook
• Ensure that any hidden grades are posted.
• Ensure that all gradebook items have a grade entered.
  • Refer to How do I set a default grade for an assignment in the Gradebook? for more information.

Additional Notes

• If you have hidden grades, students cannot see their total grade for the class.
• If you have not entered a student’s grade for an assignment, Canvas does not take that assignment into account when calculating the total grade, which may inflate a student’s grade.
• You can excuse an assignment for a student by typing EX in a cell within the Gradebook.
