Artificial Intelligence: Prompting for the Best Results

In order to prompt Artificial Intelligence (AI) for the best results, you must have a basic understanding of Prompt Literacy. This is the ability to effectively communicate with Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) models using natural language prompts. Explore the Introduction to Prompt Literacy slide deck below to learn more.

You can scour the internet and find various different ways to prompt artificial intelligence for the best results. Most of the time you’ll find a list of 3-4 steps. However, as outlined on the slide deck, we’ve identified eight essential items to include or consider when prompting programs like Google Gemini or ChatGPT. When prompting AI, we suggest you:

  1. Include Author, Audience and the Purpose/Goal.
  2. Be specific and detailed (include length, # of days, # of items in a list).
  3. Set constraints or boundaries (“include,” “do not include” statements).
  4. Include desired tone, style, and format.
  5. Include language that will mitigate bias.
  6. (Where applicable) Include examples.
  7. Use iterative prompting.
  8. Have fun and experiment!
