Make sure your position is debatable by considering other possible viewpoints and answers to your research question.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A thesis statement has 2 parts:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Statement of the topic<ul><li>The death penalty\u2026<\/li><li>Black holes\u2026<\/li><li>Rosa Parks\u2026<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>The point of the essay<ul><li>\u2026is both cruel and ineffective.<\/li><li> \u2026can teach scientists about how the universe works.<\/li><li>\u2026was the most influential person of the civil rights movement.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to avoid when writing a thesis statement:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Simply stating the topic or just stating a fact.<\/li><li>Statements such as, \u201cIn my opinion,\u201d \u201cI think.\u201d \u201cThis paper will discuss\u201d \u2026<\/li><li>Questions- it is a statement and not a question.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Be direct and specific to make sure your readers clearly know your position on the topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Examples of bad and good thesis statements:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-bright-red-background-color has-background\"><em><strong>Bad:<\/strong><\/em> This paper will discuss influential George Washington.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#c1fe6b\"><em><strong>Good:<\/strong> <\/em>George Washington was the most influential person of the history of the United States because of his morals and humble nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-bright-red-background-color has-background\"><em><strong>Bad: <\/strong><\/em>Pollution is bad for the environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#c1fe6b\"><em><strong>Good:<\/strong> <\/em>At least twenty-five percent of the federal budget should be spent on limiting pollution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-bright-red-background-color has-background\"><em><strong>Bad: <\/strong><\/em>The War of 1812 occurred before the Civil War.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#c1fe6b\"><em><strong>Good:<\/strong> <\/em>The War of 1812 set into motion the main events that caused the Civil War.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is a thesis statement?
