If you would like to walk through the processes outlined below with the ET+I team at CCS, please contact us at <a href=\"mailto:EdTech@ccsdetroit.edu\">EdTech@ccsdetroit.edu<\/a>.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Imagine that you were building a course where some of the exact same information was repeated on multiple content pages. For example, maybe part of your directions on how to post responses to an online discussion topic are the same from week to week. One of the nice features of DesignPLUS is the ability to create reusable content blocks in your course that you can bring into your content pages without having to type in the same information over and over again each time. Content blocks are like chunks of content that you can build within your Canvas course(s). Multiple content blocks can be added to a content page in your course, and they keep your content organized by using proper heading structures to meet accessibility standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If a scenario like this might apply to one or more of your Canvas courses, continue following along with these directions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"import-from-commons\">Import the [Content Blocks] Resource from Canvas Commons<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To begin, you will need to import a resource from Canvas Commons into your course so that you can begin creating content blocks.  Follow these steps for each course where you want to add content blocks into. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Log in to your Canvas course where you&#8217;d like to create reusable content blocks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On the right-hand side of the screen, click on the <strong>Import from Commons<\/strong> button.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On the left side of the Commons interface, click the <strong>Clear filters<\/strong> link to remove the <strong>College for Creative Studies<\/strong> filter that was applied.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"532\" height=\"372\" src=\"http:\/\/campus.collegeforcreativestudies.edu\/ed-tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2025\/11\/Commons_ClearFilters.png\" alt=\"A screenshot of the Canvas Commons search interface. The <strong>[Content Blocks]<\/strong> shared resource from Cidi Labs should be one of the first search results. The item will be listed as a <strong>Canvas Common Cartridge<\/strong> with the date\/time you initiated the import from Canvas Commons.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"edit-content-block-page\">Edit the [Content Blocks] Page in Your Canvas Course<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the <strong>[Content Blocks]<\/strong> page has been imported into your Canvas course, you can begin making edits to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Navigate to the <strong>Pages<\/strong> index page of your Canvas course.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Find and click on the <strong>[Content Blocks]<\/strong> page.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>NOTE:<\/strong> This page can remain <strong><em>unpublished<\/em><\/strong> in your course.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click on the \u270f\ufe0f <strong>Edit<\/strong> button at the top right-hand corner of the screen.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>When editing this page for the first time, you will see the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol style=\"list-style-type:upper-alpha\" class=\"wp-block-list advgb-dyn-795c9985\">\n<li>Page Title called <strong>[Content Blocks]<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>NOTE:<\/strong> It is important that you <strong><em>do not<\/em><\/strong> change the name of this page within your Canvas course.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Content Blocks Customization<\/strong> area &#8212; <strong><em>Do not<\/em><\/strong> make any edits to this area above the gray dots. (Notice the <strong>div<\/strong> label at the top right corner.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>My Custom Content Block 1<\/strong> &#8212; This content block (and any others that you add below it) are completely customizable. For example, you might call your content block &#8220;Discussion Requirements&#8221;.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select the <strong>Icon Picker<\/strong> button to select an icon for your content block. Be sure that any content you add to this content block remains within the pink border.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, as last steps in this editing process, we need to look at an advanced setting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"11\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Repeat Steps 5-7 above.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scroll to the bottom of the DesignPLUS sidebar, and click on the <strong>Advanced<\/strong> panel.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Edit the <strong>Content Block Title<\/strong> and <strong>Content Block Category<\/strong> boxes to suit your needs.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Content Block Title:<\/strong> It is recommended that you name this the same as your content block title in the RCE.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Example:<\/strong> Discussion Requirements<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Content Block Category:<\/strong> This is the category name you&#8217;d like your content block to appear under when you select it to add to your page via the DesignPLUS sidebar.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Example:<\/strong> Discussion Topics<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"387\" height=\"186\" src=\"http:\/\/campus.collegeforcreativestudies.edu\/ed-tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2024\/11\/DesignPLUS_ContentBlockAdvanced.png\" alt=\"A screenshot of the DesignPLUS sidebar. The process to edit this content block is identical to editing the first content block.  The main difference is to ensure your cursor is within the new content block and not in the first content block.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"add-content-block\">Add Content Block to Your Content Page<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you have created your content block on the <strong>[Content Blocks]<\/strong> page, you can add it to other content pages in your course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open an exiting content page (or create something new) in your course.  This could be a Page, Discussion, Assignment, or Classic Quiz.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click on the \u270f\ufe0f <strong>Edit<\/strong> button at the top right-hand corner of the screen.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click on the \ud83d\ude80 rocket ship icon at the top right-hand corner of your screen to open the DesignPLUS sidebar.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Alternatively, use the keyboard shortcut <strong>Alt\/Option<\/strong> + <strong>Shift<\/strong> + <strong>D<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Place your cursor where you want to insert the content block.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On the top blue toolbar of the DesignPLUS sidebar, click on the \u2795 <strong>Add New Elements<\/strong> tab.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Under the <strong>Getting Started<\/strong> heading, click on the <strong>Content Block<\/strong> icon. A new content block will be added to your page (which you can later delete).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensure that the \ud83c\udfaf <strong>Edit Current Element<\/strong> tab is now selected on the top blue toolbar of the DesignPLUS sidebar.  Also, ensure that the Content Blocks is selected under the \ud83c\udfaf <strong>Edit Current Element<\/strong> tab.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Within the <strong>Content<\/strong> panel, several expandable categories will show. Click the \u2795\/\u2796 buttons to expand or collapse them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Find and click on the content block that you created.
